We use genome sequences to advance understanding of the biology of humans and pathogens to improve human health

The Institute is a centre-stage, world leader in genome research and aims to deliver new insights into human and pathogen biology that change the course of biology and medicine. It will achieve this goal through:

  • Being an ‘ideas factory’; conceiving new biological questions to be addressed through genomics and large-scale biological science.
  • Being at the leading-edge of genomics technology development and implementation.
  • Innovation in aggregation, analysis and interpretation of large quantities of genomic data.
  • Large-scale data production; DNA sequence data will remain a major feature of our science but large-scale phenotype data from humans, mice, pathogens and cells will increasingly feature.
  • Addressing scientific questions underpinning health issues of low and middle income countries, including both infectious and non-communicable diseases.
  • Training of the next generation of scientists and clinicians in genome sciences.
  • Initiation of global collaborative research initiatives with international partners.
  • Being at the centre of a collaborative network of science.

We employ around 1,000 staff at the Sanger Institute. The Resourcing team manage all recruitment activity for the Institute, working with managers and candidates to recruit individuals with the right attitude and skills, who will contribute to the success of our organisation.

Our Learning and Development specialists ensure that we have a first class framework in place to nurture talent. They ensure the right performance management systems are in place, backed by training and development programmes which enable individuals to enhance their skills and knowledge and progress their career with us.

We also have a team of HR advisors, led by HR Partners, who work closely with our management teams to ensure we have the right team structures and working relationships in place which support the delivery of our science. This team provide professional advice and guidance on all aspects of employee relations and help to facilitate the people aspect of change programmes and restructuring.
