It’s an exciting time to join the British Museum’s Operations & Projects division in a newly created Head of Capital Projects position. As the Head of Capital Projects for the top tourist attraction in the UK, you will lead a team of specialists in improving the Museums estate in accordance with the Capital Investment Plan. Our public facilities are just as important as the many working spaces including laboratories, workshops, study and storage spaces which make up our estate – much of which is Grade 1 Listed. Your role will be to ensure successful delivery of the estates capital plan; and positively contribute both to our visitors enjoyment and our ability to conserve and display the many objects within our charge. This position is one where the successful individual can genuinely make a hugely positive impact on the organisation.
The Requirement
The British Museum is seeking to appoint a Head of Capital Projects who will report directly to the Head of Capital Planning & Programme Management. Key to success will be excellent project and programme management skills.
This is a newly expanded role within the senior leadership team. As the Capital Programme grows and projects become ever more complex and in greater volume, the project management skills required to ensure that all contracts are executed and completed accordingly, have become more demanding. It will require strong stakeholder management and analytical skills.
The Position
The Head of Capital Projects will lead a team of internal client-side Project Managers and supply chain partners, developing and maintaining robust Project Management systems, functions and processes, implementing procedures and ensuring ‘best practice’, to enable the monitoring and control of all projects. The post holder will collaborate and influence across the organisation to ensure all projects are delivered to client specification, at the highest quality, within budget and on time.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will possess a very sound understanding of capital project delivery within a Grade 1 listed estate and have experience of managing multiple and complex projects ideally within the arts/culture sector.
A results and detail-orientated approach to work delivery and output is essential.
The Head of Capital Projects will be a very visible leadership figure and must possess sufficient communication skills to lead their team of Project Managers, whilst maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and other managers.
Internal credibility will be gained by professional standing, commercial understanding and the ability to influence, plan, lead and prioritise. External credibility will arise from a naturally engaging and confident style of engagement with stakeholders.
