About the team/job

In the Variation team, we integrate and annotate large quantities of variation data from public archives and develop tools for data access, visualisation and variant interpretation. The Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor (VEP), which leverages a wide range of data to create detailed variant annotations, is our most popular product.

We seek a talented, highly motivated bioinformatics developer to help adapt and optimise our variation tools, pipelines and resources to utilise this new reference and make pangenome data available to the community.

Your role

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

• Developing and maintaining efficient methods for large-scale variant data management;
• Developing and maintaining tools for the functional annotation of variants;
• Investigating and integrating new data formats and tools;
• Collaborating with members of the broader Ensembl team both on specific development projects and to coordinate regular data/software releases;
• Engaging with the HPRC to understand tool availability and data quality;
• Sharing our work at internal meetings and scientific conferences and engaging with our user community to provide support and understand their needs;
• This position offers the motivated candidate a unique opportunity for significant scientific involvement with other groups at the EMBL-EBI beyond.

You have

• Bachelors (or equivalent) degree in computational or biological sciences;
• Higher degree or equivalent experience in genetics, biological or computational sciences;
• Experience of working with genomics data, preferably sequence variation data;
• Experience working to deadlines while delivering a high-quality product in a production development environment;
• High proficiency working in a UNIX/Linux environment;
• Proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably with knowledge of Python or Perl;
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills;
• Clear and accurate technical communication;
• A professional and helpful manner including when responding to support requests;
• Ability to work closely with other team members, giving and receiving constructive feedback;
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines;
• Good attention to detail;
• High motivation, scientific curiosity and initiative.

You might also have

Experience to demonstrate your ability to:

• Design and develop efficient large-scale data analysis pipelines and user-friendly tools/APIs;
• Focus on efficient and professional service provision;
• Use and understand the Ensembl APIs and services;
• Use and be familiar with standard bioinformatics software and formats, particularly for genome alignment and variant discovery.;
• Use relational database systems;
• Employ robust testing strategies;
• Work on a shared codebase using version control systems, preferably Git;
• Present work on behalf of the group at meetings and conferences.
