    The Met Office is recruiting for 1 Level 4 Software Developer apprentice in Exeter, with some flexibility on location.

    This post is part of the Met Office's talent pipeline activities to develop entry-level talent.

    This post is for a fixed term period of up to 27 months and is part of a formal apprenticeship programme. Digital apprentices are key to our future resourcing strategy.

    When would the apprenticeship start and how does it work?

    We would look for you to join us in September with your apprenticeship training beginning the same month. Working hours are typically 9am - 5pm and you would have 1 day per week dedicated to your 20% off-the-job training. Working towards the level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship, the training will be delivered in a variety of ways to meet your preferred learning style, in addition to self-study so candidates need to have a passion for their own development as well as be committed to the training and opportunities available. You will be managed by a line manager and have a mentor to offer further support. In addition to the formal training with a registered training provider, you will also have in house training and on the job experience.

    To work collaboratively as part of an agile software development team, building, maintaining, and supporting python based scientific and analysis software used in research and operations in the Met Office that enable forward thinking science in the Met Office.

    As our Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship , the key duties are:

    • Developing software within existing SciTools libraries (https://github.com/SciTools)
    • Providing support to scientific programmers and application developers
    • Learn about development from requirements through to delivery

    What skills are required?

    Essential criteria - We are looking for people who:

    1. Hold a minimum of Maths and English at GCSE grade 4/C and 2 A levels
    2. Have a drive to develop your skills
    3. Have a genuine interest in investigating and solving technical problems
    4. Have good communications skills - oral and written
    5. Have the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

    Desirable criteria - Ideally you would also:

    1. Have experience with at least one programming language (preferably Python)
