The databases that you manage are available, resilient, and performant, providing the required levels of service to support user load throughout the solution lifecycle. Reusable patterns and tooling are applied consistently to prevent or to reduce the frequency of failures. Where failures do occur, the databases will be able to cope until such time as the cause is corrected
Business Unit
The Orion Health Managed Services / Operations group provides proactive management of customer applications and infrastructure, to meet, or preferably, exceed customer expectations and agreed service levels.
Key Relationships
DBAs are peers to Site Reliability Engineers (SRE) will need to work closely with other members of the Ops group, as well as our customer service, support, engineering teams and client stakeholders.
Skills / Capabilities
Required:
- Strongl Microsoft SQL Server skills including architecture, administration and performance tuning
- Good understanding of data management principles. Proven experience with SQL HA and DR technologies
- Exceptional troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills. Competent in writing and refactoring SQL queries
- Intermediate or higher level cloud skills - AWS preferred
- A proactive, continuous improvement mindset. When you see something broken, you can’t help but fix it.
Preferred:
- Intermediate or higher scripting and automation skills
- Knowledge of other RDBMS (Oracle, Postgres, etc.) is desirable
Key Responsibilities
- Day to day management and optimisation of Orion Health client databases. Accountable for database availability, reliability, stability, and performance for several customer solutions.
- Analyse solutions and implement industry best practices for managed customer database instances.
- Design and implement proactive monitoring and observability of relevant database metrics.
- Monitor the health and performance of database systems, responding to alerts and incidents in a timely manner.
- Work with peer SREs to roll out application upgrades and changes to our production environment.
- Diagnose, mitigate, and resolve database-related incidents during business and On Call hours.
- Participate in post-incident analysis, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures.
- Design and deliver optimisations, automation and continuous improvement of database infrastructure.
- Contribute to capacity planning and scalability initiatives, ensuring database resources can handle growing demands while optimising for cost.
- Document changes and learnings, so your learnings turn into repeatable proactive actions.
- Stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies to continuously improve database reliability.
- Design, test and implement database archiving, backup and DR policies and processes
Experience
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- 5+ years of experience in RDBMS database administration or database administration, in large mission-critical production environments
- 3+ years of experience in database performance monitoring and tuning
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Relevant intermediate level industry qualifications, such as AWS Certified Database - Specialty, Microsoft SQL Server based certification (MCSA, MCSD, MCSE or newer role based - Azure Database Administrator Associate, etc.)
