The British Museum’s Learning and National Partnerships department is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to support its extensive, internationally recognised volunteer programme. The Volunteer Coordinator will be an integral part of a team that works with over 600 active volunteers. Individually and collectively volunteers make an invaluable contribution to the Museum’s activity, whether in public facing roles or behind the scenes. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Museum and help develop its volunteer programmes. Supporting the volunteers who deliver the regular ‘Around the World’ highlights tour will be an important part of this role.
Key areas of responsibility:
• To manage the recruitment and selection of volunteers for the Museum’s volunteer programmes
• To carry out aspects of vetting e.g. security clearance, taking up references
• To provide a point of contact and pastoral care for volunteers from across the Museum, making sure that their roles are running smoothly
• To provide basic pastoral and legal advice and support for staff managing volunteers
• To take responsibility for day-to-day operation of Highlights tours
• To support the delivery of training to volunteers who present the volunteer- run learning programmes
• To develop a knowledge and understanding of the Museum’s collections so as to write and deliver effective training for volunteers
• To perform administrative tasks e.g. making sure that the Volunteer database is maintained on the HR system, CIPHR
• To contribute ideas which may improve the overall programme e.g. by increasing diversity of volunteers, quality of visitor engagement with the collection, or efficiency of the programme etc.
Person Specification:
The ideal candidate will be educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) and will have high levels of computer literacy. Previous administrative experience is essential to the role as is previous experience of working with the public. The successful applicant will be diplomatic and persuasive and have excellent negotiation skills and the ability to prioritise workload.
