    This is an exciting opportunity to lead and inspire the British Museum’s Visitor Services team in a rapidly modernising and world-renowned setting. As Visitor Services Supervisor for the top tourist attraction in the UK, you will have a strong background in successful leadership and a history of motivating teams who have delivered exceptional levels of customer service.

    The Visitor Services Department is responsible for ensuring the Museum’s collection is accessible to everyone in a safe, secure, and welcoming environment. In addition to staffing the galleries and special exhibitions the department staffs Ticket Desks, Information Desks, Contact Centre, Cloakrooms and the Ford Centre for Young Visitors.

    The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and receptive to change, willing to learn new skills and adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic cultural and commercial environment. This will be paramount as during these exciting times, changes will be essential as the Museum strives to deliver an unsurpassed visitor experience in new galleries and exhibition spaces.

    This position is for a fixed term period in order to provide backfill cover for maternity leave.

    Key areas of responsibility:

    • Lead and motivate a diverse Visitor Services team to deliver an exceptional visitor experience.
    • Actively monitor and robustly manage the performance of members of the team using established British Museum procedures.
    • Organise team members effectively throughout the public spaces, responding to changing visitor requirements.
    • Enjoy delivering an exceptional level of service by actively and effectively communicating with a broad range of visitors ensuring visitor security and safety are upheld.
    • Support Museum objectives, sales targets and procedures.
    • Be responsible at all times for the Museum’s security and health & safety, including specific duties leading a team during fire evacuations.
    • Develop a team of Visitor Assistants through coaching, training and career reviews.
    • Some outdoor working and manual handling duties will be required.

    Person Specification:

    The successful candidate will be educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics and have experience leading a team in a customer led, security environment. Candidates must have the ability to remain calm and to work effectively under pressure. Also important will be their ability to work on their own initiative whilst maintaining exceptionally high personal and professional standards for both themselves and their team. Candidates must promote a philosophy of continuous improvement with their team and their leadership colleagues.

    Fluency in another language other than English would be highly desirable and the successful candidate should be willing to undergo an accredited First Aiders training course and attend subsequent refresher courses as necessary.

    This position operates on a roster shift basis which includes weekends and a late night on Fridays.
