    ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling is on a mission to accelerate the pace of life sciences research. To do that, we build a suite of tools that scientists use daily to solve humanity's most pressing problems. Some of these tools help scientists better collaborate—like our electronic lab notebook & workflow product. Others help scientists do their research—like our molecular biology suite, which scientists use to analyze & work with DNA. This is where the Assays team comes in.

After a scientist conducts an assay (experiment) in the wet lab, they use Benchling to view and analyze the data they produced. The Assays team builds the products that let scientists see and interact with the raw outputs of their physical experiments, analyze and summarize the experimental data, and find trends across experiments. For example, a scientist might use the Assays product to capture, analyze, and visualize the quantitative effects of drug candidates in a drug development pipeline.

We're looking for an experienced manager to support the engineers on the Assays team. You'll work closely with product and design (and our customers!) to define the team's roadmap in this role. We're particularly excited to hear from managers with a track record of obsessing over customer needs and product quality as they build their roadmaps and guide their team's execution.

    WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

    • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of exceptional engineers.
    • Partner closely with product and design to define the team's roadmap and long-term product strategy.
    • Coordinate across engineering teams to build durable engineering systems
    • Hold a high bar for product quality as the team executes its work.
    • Meet with customers to understand their science & what they need from Benchling.
    • Contribute to engineering-wide organizational improvements as part of the management team.

    ABOUT YOU

    • At least three years of experience managing engineering teams.
    • Managed geographically distributed teams or remote first teams.
    • Grown high-trajectory, early-to-mid-career engineers into leaders with company-wide impact.
    • Experience (and enjoy!) working directly with customers to inform your team's roadmap.
    • Strong written communication skills.
    • Interest in biotech
    • Prior experience in biology or life sciences is a huge plus but not necessary.
