Through cutting-edge research and development, we provide innovative technical solutions to the Ministry of Defence and wider government. As an AI and Data Science Specialist, you'll apply your knowledge to fascinating new projects - and in doing so, help solve real-world defence and security challenges.

You'll join our new Data Innovation Team, specialising in artificial intelligence and data science. Leading the delivery of research, you'll turn data into an information advantage and help accelerate the responsible and ethical adoption of AI across defence. You'll apply creative problem solving to a variety of data sets, and use a mix of traditional, numerical and statistical approaches to produce results. This is varied, exciting work. You'll inform complex, classified projects ranging from data collection and processing, through to big data engineering and computer network and host log analysis. That means knowledge of data science research and development, machine learning, and AI application is essential.

As you'll be assisting various partners including the new Defence AI Centre, F-35 project teams and the Government, you'll know how to build positive and collaborative relationships internally and externally. Enthusiastic and encouraging, you'll inspire ideas and deliver impactful results. And, you'll form links across Dstl, industry and academia by supporting a number of group-wide activities including forums, monthly meets and the mentoring of junior staff.

To join, you'll need a genuine interest and curiosity for data science and AI, and the drive to explore and develop new possibilities. While a PhD or MSc is desirable, a numerical degree with a working knowledge of maths and statistics (such as data science, computer science, engineering, sciences, or a related subject), is essential, as is experience of data science research and development using Python, R, Java or other relevant languages.
