    About The Team

    The Crunchyroll team is growing and expanding our video engineering organization to provide our Anime fans across the globe a high-quality, innovative, performant, and reliable video playback experience. Our video teams are responsible for building and supporting business critical video systems and video-related cloud solutions..We work with multiple teams to build scalable and reliable services.

    A day in the life of Staff Software Engineer

     

    Design & build highly efficient services and infrastructure for video encoding, delivery & playback

    Work with product teams to drive both new features and improve and maintain critical consumer facing services

    Collaborate with internal teams and ensure they are successful in ingesting video content

    Ensure the ingested content is delivered to our end users in a highly optimized & secured manner (performant & protected with DRM)

    Collaborate multi-functionally with client engineering teams, infrastructure and core system teams

    Innovate on technologies used to deliver a best in class video playback experience

    About You:

    5+ years of software development experience with OTT video delivery

    Knowledge of streaming video delivery, video encoding workflows, video origin architecture, and issues of scale for video delivery

    Experience with one or more high level languages like Java, Python, Javascript

    Expertise in cloud VOD transcode and packaging services.

    Knowledge of cloud based encoding workflows and how they integrate with industry standards audio/video codecs (AVC/HEVC/DD+), HDR (HDR10/Dolby Vision), DRM technologies (Fairplay, Playready, Widevine).

    Strong understanding of HTTP based adaptive video delivery formats (HLS, DASH)

    Expertise in multifaceted ad insertion, both client-side and server-side

    Knowledge of cloud delivery (AWS or GCP is a plus).

    Technical background in video, back-end, distributed systems with attention to scalability

    Always advocating for engineering excellence and operational excellence

    Enjoy taking ownership for critical operations

    Get passionate about finding simple solutions to complex technical challenges

    You have deep understanding of QoE/QoS related to video distribution and understand the observability and monitoring and take steps to implement it

    Ambitious in your goals but pragmatic in your approach

    Insist following standard methodologies in all aspects of engineering and video delivery (KISS, OOP, SOLID, etc)

    Strong understanding of playback flows from a client application standpoint

    A willingness to be on-call on a rotational basis to quickly address customer facing issues

    Strong quantitative, analytical, problem solving, debugging and decision-making skills.
