    The British Museum’s Learning and National Partnerships department are seeking an Access and Equality Manager to manage and advise on the Museum’s access and equality provision for disabled visitors and staff, and to work with underrepresented groups on specified projects. As Access and Equality Manger you will act as an advocate for Access and Equality across the Museum and contribute to ensuring that the Museum is complying with the latest equality legislation for visitors and employees.

    Key areas of responsibility:

    • To provide advice and direction to gallery and exhibition planning in relation to physical, intellectual and sensory access.
    • To offer advice and direction to other departments and sections across the Museum (Marketing, Interpretation, HR, Capital Planning and Programme Management, Visitor Services, Exhibitions, Volunteers and others) on all aspects of physical and intellectual access and equality for both visitors and staff.
    • To be responsible for advising on and developing the Public Equality and Diversity Procedure to operate alongside the Human Resources Equality and Diversity Procedure.
    • To work with HR to ensure the Museum has an effective Access and Equality Awareness staff training programme and provide Access and Equality Awareness staff training where required.
    • To collaborate with existing partners in the provision of programmes and resources for specific groups (e.g. deaf people, people with visual impairments, people with learning difficulties, people with mental health problems).
    • To assist Learning Programmes teams in building new partnerships and managing innovative learning projects for disabled and underrepresented groups as appropriate.
    • To advise the marketing teams in promoting and publicising events to disabled audiences, encouraging currently under- represented groups to use the museum as a learning and leisure resource.

    Person Specification:

    The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or have an equivalent HE qualification (or equivalent experience) and will have up to date knowledge of and practical experience in some aspect of work in access experience. The successful applicant will also have previous experience in events organisation and will have good public speaking and writing skills. Proven employment experience in a disability organisation, in education/training related to access or community/social services work involving people with disabilities is also required. Demonstrable time management skills and good negotiation and persuasion skills are also essential.
