    The British Museum is seeking a new Interpretation Officer to join its tightly-knit Interpretation Team. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with project teams, curators and contractors to ensure that special exhibitions and new permanent galleries best meet our audiences’ needs. This particular role will focus on delivering interpretation work for a number of exciting forthcoming special exhibitions.

    Interpretation Officers work to tight deadlines, usually on multiple projects. This role will involve picture research as well as proof-reading, managing an interpretation schedule and assisting with the development of digital media. The successful candidate will also need to project manage contractors undertaking visitor research and evaluation.

    Key areas of responsibility:

    To help project teams define a clear intellectual structure for exhibitions

    • To help shape key messages and learning outcomes for object-based displays
    • To ensure exhibitions and gallery projects have a visitor-centred approach throughout
    • To use visitor research and evaluation to advocate for visitors
    • To edit exhibition text, ensuring consistency across the Museum
    • To work collaboratively with colleagues on the development of digital media and other interpretive elements
    • To ensure than all exhibitions and displays are fully accessible

    Person Specification:

    The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. Previous editorial experience within the museum or publishing world is essential as is proficiency in both PC and Mac programmes. The ideal candidate will also be highly developed in liaison, diplomatic and influencing skills. The successful candidate will be an excellent team player and a persuasive and flexible communicator.
