The Coins and Medals Department within the British Museum are looking for a Documentation and Imaging Assistant to catalogue the ifs Catling collection of notgeld (emergency money) on the Merlin collections management database, produce digital images, match them to records, add them to the digital asset management system, and to rehouse the collection.
Key areas of responsibility:
• To create object records on Excel and liaise with the documentations team to upload them to the Merlin collections management database.
• To liaise with conservation about removing the objects from their original albums.
• To produce record standard digital images using a scanner set-up.
• To ensure images are labelled with their Merlin PRN and to oversee their bulk upload in the digital asset management system (Odin).
• To label and integrate the objects with the rest of the collection in archival quality albums, and to amend their locations on Merlin.
• Problem solving in all aspects of documentation and image production: identifying and amending errors, working with curators and other staff to correct problems.
Person Specification:
The ideal candidate will possess A-Level qualifications, or equivalent, and a strong knowledge of German. You will have experience of and expertise in collections management databases and Excel, as well as confidence in using scanners and digital cameras. Previous experience may include working within the capacity of Assistant Collections Manager, Documentation Assistant or significant experience of voluntary work, with collections, in a museum or gallery context. An interest in numismatics and the ability to create and manage batch processes in Photoshop is preferred but not essential.
